Childhood memory exercise

 1st person present tense
It's my birthday tomorrow!  I'm going to be 6!  There is a pile of presents in a corner of the family room stacked like building blocks.  The top box is wrapped in Strawberry Shortcake paper.  I can almost smell her sweet scent and taste the yummy strawberries.  Actually, I smell wrapping paper and Scotch tape- smells like something deliciously new.  I pick the box up and shake it.  No Sound.  What can it be?  It's not very heavy.  I hug the box.  Whatever it is, it's mine.  I giggle.  I grin.  I toss it into the air and catch it.  I toss it again and catch it.  It's in the air one more time, but this time....oops.  It goes thud onto the carpet.  I look at my present.  Uh oh.  The paper's torn on one corner.  I can see the pale blue hoof of a toy pony, a My Little Pony Princess Pony.  Oh goodie!  Making sure no one saw what happened, I put the box back on pile upside down over the rip.  Maybe Mom won't notice.

3rd person past tense
The girl bounced around the family room reveling in the knowledge that her birthday was the very next day.  Her pile of presents sat in the corner, and she eyed them with the glee of a hungry rodent about to have a feast.  The box on top was wrapped in paper featuring one of her favorite characters, Strawberry Shortcake.  It was a medium sized box of not too much weight, something that could easily contain a simple toy.  The slickness of the wrapping paper made it seem fresh and new and begging to be opened, but the girl knew she had to wait one more day.

She amused herself by tossing the box in the air and catching it.  Each time it flew higher and higher until at last it missed her waiting arms and landed on the carpet with a thud.  She barely dared to take a peek at the result.  For the most part, the box was intact, but there at the corner a crease in the wrapping had turned into a tear.

Well, as long as it was open, it couldn't hurt to take a little peek, could it?  A pale blue hoof appeared beneath the cellophane window of a cardboard box with a familiar logo.  The girl grinned.  A brand new My Little Pony princess pony would be hers tomorrow.  She did her best to cover the tear.  Then she gingerly placed the box back on the pile upside down in order to disguise her mischief.
