Equality

Small and chocolate skinned
running through the woods
hiding from the hound dogs
human stolen goods.

A heart thudding with fear
that freedom won't last long
nor precious jewels of hope
promised in a song.

Star of yellow sewn on
every coat and dress.
Brownshirts on each corner
think they're cleaning up a mess

A heart beating with shame
to be send away from school.
There's no more biking to the park
or swimming in the pool.

Women wearing long skirts
and banners draped like sails
parading and shouting and holding up signs
cheering those who've been in jails.

A heart patters with pride
No addled brains have they
And they will fight to prove it's so
"Votes for Women!" they say.

Three hearts tied together
along the river of time
Why is being different
treated as a crime?
